What is skilled nursing?

Most individuals don’t think about skilled nursing care until a family member needs more help than a caregiver can offer. Skilled nursing care facilities, also known as nursing homes, are healthcare facilities regulated by a state’s Department of Health Services and offer long-term or short-term care for individuals with serious health issues that cannot be treated at home or an assisted living facility.

What to expect from skilled nursing facilities?

Skilled nursing care facilities offer 24/7 care and services provided by trained professionals, such as post-op wound care, physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. They also provide pharmaceutical, lab, and radiology services, social and educational activities, laundry services, limited transportation, end-of-life care, and respite care. Some facilities cater to specific health conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and provide personal care like bathing, dressing, and incontinence.

Skilled Nursing vs. Assisted Living

Skilled nursing care is recommended if a family member needs round-the-clock nursing care, assistance with meals, personal hygiene, and portability, and more help than the family or caregiver can provide. Assisted living is recommended if a senior doesn’t require much medical care but needs more assistance than they can receive at home. Assisted living offers independent living in apartments, meals, housekeeping, transportation, a schedule of events, dressing, hygiene, and medication assistance, and a resident doctor or nurse on staff.
